Thirteen people, including five doctors, have been charged in a multi-million-krona fraud scheme in which a drug used to treat excessive sweating is suspected of having been prescribed without medical justification.

The charges, brought before Stockholm District Court, concern 17 Swedish regions that were collectively invoiced nearly SEK 35 million. More than SEK 15 million had been paid out before the scheme was uncovered and stopped.

The alleged fraud involves Myobloc, a prescription medicine that is not approved in Sweden but can be prescribed by doctors under a special licence for the treatment of conditions including hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.
